Evita (2019)
2 August – 21 September
lyrics by TIM RICE
music by ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER
Our fastest-selling and highest-grossing production to date in 2019, Evita won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical. From a life of poverty to spiritual leader of the nation, Eva Peron was loved, hated, derided and venerated. Dividing the Argentinian people with her patriotic speeches, her ambition, glamour and magnetism established ‘Evita’ as the world’s first major political celebrity. With a chart-topping score including Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, Oh What A Circus, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, and the Oscar-winning You Must Love Me, Jamie Lloyd directed Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's iconic musical. Samantha Pauly, Ektor Rivera and Trent Saunders appeared with the support of UK Equity, incorporating the Variety Artistes’ Federation, pursuant to an exchange program between American Equity and UK Equity.

Reviews
Daily Telegraph
"REVELATORY...a new production from Jamie Lloyd that demands our attention. Evita's legacy has been re-evaluated. But so, too, has Lloyd Webber's."
Metro
"THRILLING...sexy, full-bloodied and furious. Heart-stoppingly exciting and evisceratingly relevant."
Evening Standard
"PARED-DOWN, MUSCULAR, EXPRESSIVE and EXPLOSIVE" The production’s beating heart is American actress Samantha Pauly, who possesses a beguiling blend of butter-wouldn’t-melt charm and sensual guile, a pristine voice with a steel edge, and more than a touch of star quality."
Arts Desk
"Jamie Lloyd’s stripped-down, super-sleek, contemporary take excavates the biting satire and locates the furious spirit of Eva Perón – portrayed, with unusually convincing youth and fire, by the electrifying American actress Samantha Pauly...matched by Trent Saunders’ excellent Che whose intensely physical performance is a striking contrast to Eva’s laser-like focus"
Gay Times
“Outstanding dancing, coupled with wonderful singing, proficient musicianship and quite possibly the most pyrotechnics we’ve ever seen grace this stage. This is a smart, timely revival of Evita, which reflects the political sphere we currently inhabit.”
The Times
"The music is immaculately played. Alan Williams's orchestra is one of the stars of the evening"
Encore Radio
“One of the most intelligent and creative musicals I have seen. This production is raw and exposed in both its direction, choreography and design. From Fabian Aloise's choreography and Jamie Lloyd’s direction to Soutra Gilmour’s costume and set design, every aspect married perfectly."
BroadwayWorld
"Jamie Lloyd's Evita dazzles with an interpretation that is stylistically groundbreaking. Together, Soutra Gilmour (design), Jon Clark(lighting) and Nick Lidster (sound) have created an immersive experience that is UTTERLY SUBLIME. Created by visionaries, and powered by a cast of uninhibited talent - who could ask for more?"
WhatsOnStage
“Jamie Lloyd’s radical staging strips away all the glamour and passion that characterised Hal Prince's original version. What he is left with is the hard sinew and bone of Andrew Lloyd Webber's full-blooded music – arguably his best score – and Tim Rice's sharp, politically astute lyrics.”
Time Out
“Forget everything you know about ‘Evita’: this one properly rocks. A pumping, sped-up Evita, edged with dirt, rust and grime”
The Stage
“The honey-voiced Samantha Pauly is an Evita for the social media age: very modern, thoroughly calculating and scarily precocious."
The American
"Jamie Lloyd and Soutra Gilmour never disappoint because they always push the boat out and here again they have dusted off a show which is now 41 years old and re-invented it for a young audience. VIVA EVITA!"”
Mail on Sunday
"Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s best creation - an ever-relevant brew of ROCK, POLITICS and POPULISM."
Sunday Mirror
"As nakedly ambitious Eva, Samantha Pauly delivers a star-making performance, sparking off Trent Saunders’ cynical Che"
