By William Shakespeare

Our 1986 production of Romeo and Juliet was directed by Declan Donnellan and featured two actors who are now British household names, Ralph Fiennes as Romeo and Richard (Hugh) Bonneville as Abram. It was in fact, Hugh Bonneville's stage debut.

Financial Times

"The steady improvement of presentation at this address continues with a stylish Victorian Romeo and Juliet directed by Declan Donnellan and designed by Nick Ormerod, both of Cheek by Jowl" "Ralph Fiennes's impulsive, athletic Romeo is idolised in a jeering way by Nicholas Wolff's homosexual hysteric Mercutio."

The Times

"The production is masterfully orchestrated, with simultaneous scenes, intercut overlaps and varieties of group movement between frozen tableaux, drilled gesture and outbursts of pandemonium - all related to different levels of reality." "There is no apology for the tragedy: it is the thing itself."
